Invitation
We cordially invite you to participate in the tenth bi‑annual conference on Elementary Mathematics Teaching, SEMT ‘09, which is to be held from August 23-28, 2009, in Prague. The programme will be focused on the teaching of mathematics to children within the age-range5–12 years.
The theme of SEMT ‘09 is
‘The development of mathematical understanding’.
The Symposium comprises plenary lectures, presentation of papers, workshops and discussion groups.

Call for papers
This is an invitation to colleagues who would wish to present their paper at the conference.
Papers may be of two types:
- Research papers which have a rigorous theoretical underpinning.
- Papers from teachers and others on research/experimental work which has been done in the classroom.
All papers submitted must relate to the theme of the conference and will be reviewed by a panel of experts, provided the guidelines and timetable, as set out below, are met.
Guidelines for papers
- Research papers should meet the following guidelines:
- An explicit statement of the aim of the research should be given.
- A sustained argument based on theory and referenced to relevant publications should be made.
- The methodology used in experimental research should be made explicit.
- The results should be presented and analysed.
- Conclusions should be drawn which include the implications of the research to teachers or teacher training.
- Classroom research papers should contain the following:
- The aim of the research.
- References to similar work or theory on which the work is based.
- Details of the experiment(s) used in the research.
- Details of the methodology used when using the experiments.
- The presentation of the results and their analysis.
- Conclusions, implications for the classroom and future work.
General matters
All papers should adhere to the following principles:
- Clarity including using standard references and giving definitions of crucial terms
- Organisation: the content must be well organisedaccording to precise headings such as Aim(s), Theoretical Framework, Methodology etc.
- Understandable and submitted in word processor proof English
- Conform to the following specification:
Should not be longer than 8 pages
Should be printed in Times New Roman or similar font together with the use of Symbol font where necessary;
The page should be suitable for transcription to A4 size, with text dimensions being 16 cm x 24.7 cm (ie a 2.5 cm margin on A4 paper)
The font size to be used is 14 with ‘single’ spacing between lines and 6 point space between paragraphs.
Deadlines for authors:
- The full text of the papers wishing to be presented should be submitted by March 25, 2009.
- Papers will be submitted to referees by April 1, 2009.
- Authors will receive referees comments not later than April 30, 2009.
- Final deadline for submission of papers following any necessary modifications requested by the referees is June 1, 2009. Papers received after June 1, 2009 will not be accepted for publication.
- Proposals for posters of one A4 page must be sent to the organizers by March 31, 2009.
The accepted papers will then be published in the conference proceedings which will be handed out to participants at the start of the conference.
Student Teachers
Student-teachers may participate at the conference. We offer these students a reduced conference fee. If requested, a session for these students can be arranged.

Conference venue
Prague, the Capital of the Czech Republic, is proud of its long tradition of higher education dating from the Middle Ages, it is ranked as one of the most attractive cities in Europe. It can offer not only the most unique medieval urban settings but also a rich choice of cultural events and social enjoyment.
Conference fee
If received before May 31, 2009 6 000 CZK; for students: 3 000 CZK
after May 31, 2009 6 500 CZK; for students: 3 300 CZK
Application forms and payment which arrive after July 1, 2009, will not be processed.
The prices are given in CZK. The exchange rate on September 27, 2008, is 1 EUR = 24,425 CZK. Please note this may vary in line with international currency markets.
Accommodation is offered on the University campus in Prague (rooms with a shower and WC – bed and breakfast) at reduced prices. The organisers are able to extend your accommodation in Prague, should you so wish. Hotel accommodation is also offered.
Cancellations: An administration charge of 500 CZK will be made if the place is cancelled before or on June 30, 2009. For places cancelled from July 1, 2009, all non-recoverable costs will be charged in addition to the 500 CZK administration fee.
If you plan to participate at SEMT ’09, please return the registration form as soon as possible but not later than March 31, 2009.
Grants
The organisers hope that all mathematics educators who wish to make a presentation can attend SEMT ‘09, including those who come from countries with limited financial resources. For this reason, the Organising Committee will award grants in order to assist those who will have a refereed presentation and who without such aid would not be able to participate. The amount of money available is limited; the grant cannot cover all expenses related to the participation of grantees at SEMT 09.
Those who consider themselves to be eligible to receive these grants should apply to the Organising Committee. The application should include:
- Personal and professional information.
- Description of applicant's intended presentation.
- Financial assistance anticipated from other sources.
- Other pertinent personal information.
All requests must reach the Organising Committee by March 25, 2009.
